Obituary of John L. Ragan from the “Gastonia Gazette” of Tuesday, July 2, 1918.
MR. JOHN L. RAGAN
“Following a long and painful illness from cancer of the stomach, Mr. John L. Ragan, a well-known farmer of the New Hope section of the county, died at his home Monday [July 1]. His death was not unexpected as he had been gradually growing weaker for the past several weeks. Mr. Ragan went to Mayo’s Hospital [in Rochester, Minnesota] in February 1917, for treatment and had sought relief from his suffering at other places but without avail.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Carpenter, Mrs. J. J. Kincaid, Mrs. W. R. Harrison and one brother, Mr. George W. Ragan, of Gastonia. He also leaves five children, Lloyd D., Carlyle, who is in the army, and Misses Ola, Zaida and Olive. Mrs. Ragan, who was a sister of Col. C. B. Armstrong, died about two years ago.
Funeral services were held at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon at New Hope Presbyterian church, of which he had long been a loyal and consistent member. Rev. Mr. Overcash, the pastor, officiated, assisted by Rev. R. S. Burwell, a former pastor. Interment was in the New Hope cemetery.
Deceased was a son of the late Daniel Ragan and was born and reared in Gaston county. He was about 63 years of age.”
