    Hi Mary,

I'm Paul's son.  I search mostly on familysearch.org & ancestry, both have most of the same data but use different algorithms for "find names like" so I do find different results.

I searched some New York passenger manifests, the only close match is her possible first adopted family Aldington.  Albert Aldington was a NYC barber and may have adopted her in 1880. I think the verbal story in Joan's report that she was placed with one family then taken from them and moved to Tiffin, Ohio may be accurate.

Her own statements for every census indicate she was born in New York so I think that is accurate.  Interestingly she gave a variety of responses about the birthplace of her parents for the census. I may file some requests to get more information about her adoption(s) but in New York those applications need proof of lineage and the data isn't searchable online.

Hey David, Who's son are you??
Did you ever go through ship's logs of immigrants coming to the US via New York during the time my grandmother may have come with her father? (as the story goes... her mother died in England and her father died aboard the ship en route to America). She would be listed as an orphan and possibly her father's name would be listed. If you know how to do the research and I can get access to the records on line etc, I would be happy to help out!

I haven't seen anything to support the story of wealth or related to royalty as Joan recorded.  You can confidently place Francis Allington's birthplace as New York in part because she consistently stated that on the 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930 census records.  She also inconsistently noted the birthplace of her parents on the census reports.  The 1930 census has Francis Bauman's parents listed as both from New York, others list her father as British and mother unknown.
As to someone who migrated from Ireland with her father that could be Bridget O'byrne from Monaghan, Ireland born in 1834?  I didn't research anything about her father and when he passed away.

Wow...this is really interesting! Mom 's remembrance was very similar. She said that her mother was rich and a trunk full of fabulous dresses that were all stolen from her when she became an orphan. We have her mother's name, but not her father's name unless it is Franziska. We could find out if she was really wealthy or if the children just added that to her story.

I looked a Joan’s report, from discussion with mom, and it does not say where Francis Mary Allington was born .  I wonder if the birth certificate you found was really her, or not?  The last names were close, and the date was right.

For the Bauman(n) family familysearch.org has a lot of information going back to Switzerland if you have an account.  I attached a screenshot from that site showing the parents of Samuel H. Baumann who were both born in Aargau, Switzerland.
The McManamon.me site lists the birthplace of Francis Allington as Ireland which could be corrected.

David has gotten interested in ancestry. He did the 23 and me test, and found I think 13% Jewish ancestry.    He thought it was through Francis Mary Allington, our grandmother.  She was an orphan and converted when she was 12.  I emailed Judy and Judy also got the Jewish ancestry  when she   did 23 and me. Judy thinks it comes from Samuel Bauman, but she did not say much more. Judy said she is almost done with a book on her ancestry.  If you found some of Samuel Bauman’s ancestry then maybe that would support, or contradict, what Judy thinks.
