    • LifeSketch: This life sketch is taken from a publication called "Bits and Pieces\" a book published to honor the centennial (1882) of the founding of Idana, KS. The author is unknown. BALDWINS, DAWSONS, and GONSERS At this time, the seventh generation of the Baldwins, Dawsons, and Gonsers are living in Idana. The Helmet Dawsons came to America from England, going first to Salt Lake City where Mr. Dawson set up his own sawmill and helped prepare the lumber for the erection of the now beautiful and famous Mormon Temple. After a year of living with the Mormons, Mr. Dawson disapproved of the practice of Mormonism and left there, going to Fort Halleck, where they remained until the Spring of 1866. At that time, they came to Kansas, locating in Clay Center, where Mr. Dawson helped build the Dexter Dam. He then took up a homestead in the Oakland township, adjoining the Albert Baldwin homestead in Five Creek Township. Mr. Dawson built the first sawmill in the county on Timber Creek. The Albert Baldwins, who originated in Vermont, came to Kansas in l882. Their son, John Baldwin, had preceded them, homesteading in Five Creek Townships, near Idana, Kansas. In 1876, John Baldwin married Louisa Dawson. They established their home on his homestead, it being the quarter section where the Centennial School was located. This land was donated by Mr. & Mrs. Baldwin. They spent their entire married life on this farm until they moved into Idana on their retirement. At the time of their marriage, there was no Idana. They were married by Justice of the Peace Tom Pinkerton in his home across the street from the cemetery, which has since been torn down. In 1936, Mr. & Mrs. John Baldwin celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family gathering at their home in Idana. They recalled that the weather was much milder February 14, 1876, than 1936. On their wedding night, a big dance was given at their home and the crowd celebrated with a bon fire and an outdoor frolic. A book could be written about the experiences of Mr. & Mrs. Baldwin and the early pioneers of Clay County. They recall the many exciting Indian scares, including the one that swept over Clay County following word of the Massacre at White Rock Creek. Those of the children who helped them celebrate their anniversary of 60 years were: Mr. & Mrs. Fred (Cora) Dotson; Mrs. Nettie Walker; Mrs. Vernie Ferree of Emporia, Kansas; Mr. & Mrs. John Gonser of Idana; Lloyd Baldwin of Morganville; and Eugene Baldwin of Clay Center. They had 28 grandchildren and 16 great-grand children. Eugene Albert Baldwin, son of John and Louise Baldwin, was born August 1893, at Washington, Kansas. Bertha Christina Hagberg, daughter of Fred and Ida Hagberg, was born December 1892, in Lincoln, Nebraska and died May 1933. Eugene and Bertha were married in Clay Center, Kansas, December 25, 1911. They came to Idana where \"Gene\" was the Idana barber. He and Bertha ran the Baldwin Café in 1915. That was the year Idana had the smallpox epidemic. There were some very, very sick people but Dr. Moore pulled most of them through. Bertha, however, was one of the victims. Later Gene owned a thrashing machine and harvested for farmers in the surrounding area. The children of Bertha and Gene are Cleo, Loren, Evelyn, Dorothy and Donald. Cleo went to school in Idana and was a favorite of the Moore girly, later she was a telephone operator for Helm Printz. The other children moved away with their parents. Loren died in 1981. Eugene married Maxine Hiteman, after Bertha\'s death, and moved to Wichita where he worked for Boeing Aircraft. The Gonsers originated in Pennsylvanis, coming to Kansas in 1870. They settled just north of Idana in Bloom Township, where John Gonser was born in 1872. While a young man, he ran the ferry at Rocky Ford across the Republican River. In 1898, he married Erma Arletta Baldwin, daughter of John and Louisa Dawson Baldwin. They spent some time in Oklahoma and on a farm before moving to Idana in 1922. They managed the telephone office in Idana for a number of years. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary a short time before Mrs. Gonser’s death in 1951. Merle Gonser, son of John and Arletta Baldwin Gonser, who is living in Idana at this time, has spent most of his life there. Merle’s daughter, Nancy Gonser Nelson, and her children and grandchildren, are now living in Idana, making seven generations of Baldwins, Dawsons, and Gonsers involved in Idana living. Loretta Gonser parry, and her husband, Lloyd, moved back to the old stomping grounds after Lloyd’s retirement from the plumbing and steam fitting business. They bought the old Campbell place east of Idana, where they plan to stay until their “second retirement.” Their children and grandchildren enjoy visiting the farm, as they call it, and hearing about their ancestors.
