Lieutenant Commander James W. Baldwin, 58, a decorated U.S. Navy veteran, and his wife, Carolyn Cone Baldwin, 55, a noted concert pianist, were killed in a four car crash half a mile west of the toll plaza on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The Baldwins were hit head on when a car careened over the center line after sideswiping another vehicle. They were then plowed into by another car from behind that was unable to stop. The Baldwins lived at 58 Palm Avenue, San Francisco, and were returning home after visiting their daughter, Carolyn Schlesinger, and her husband, Alex Schlesinger, in Berkeley. The accident occurred at 12:50am on December 28, 1946. Mrs. Baldwin died at 2:34am and Mr. Baldwin died about an hour later.
James Warren Baldwin was born on May 19, 1890, in Brooklyn, NY, to George P. and Sophia (Mattmann) Baldwin. He was a veteran of both WWI and WWII. At the time of his death, he was on terminal leave from the Navy and employed by the Paraffine Company of Emeryville, CA. A Naval Reserve Officer, he went on active duty in 1940 and was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack. During the war he commanded the transport U.S.S. Crater. He held the Army Distinguished Service Cross and Navy Distinguished Service Medal. He was also a member of the American rifle team in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
James and Carolyn were married on May 2, 1917, in New York City.
Double funerals were performed for the Baldwins on December 30, 1946, at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA.
