Joseph Auguste Vitter

Person ID: I1088
-
Name Joseph Auguste Vitter [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9] Relationship with Jeffrey Scott Vitter Name Auguste Born 16 Mar 1828 Clerval, Doubs, Franche-Comté, France [3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10]
Gender Male Died 9 Jun 1896 New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA [11, 12, 13]
- 7:05 am
Notes - There are two entries in the Civil War Muster Rolls that might correspond to Auguste Vitter:
August Vitter, Company D, 19 Illinois Infantry, Private (unlikely since that would be a Yankee!)
A. Vitter, 10 Louisiana Infantry, Squadron Guides d'Orleans, Louisiana Militia, private (more likely).
The census records of 1880 apparently contain several typos. Some children are listed with the wrong age. For example, Arthur is listed as 5, but his N.O. birth record gives the date 3/25/1856, making him 23 or 24. Victor is listed as 10, but his N.O. birth record gives the date 8/11/1858, making him 11 or 12. There are no N.O. birth records for Charles (age 3), Violate (age 4), and Louisa (age 16, born in Switzerland according to census), Paul (age 7), and Eugène (age 19). Inclusion of those five children "fills the gap" in the impressive record of births by Marie Victoire, so it is conceivable that they are her children. It's also possible that she took a trip back to Switzerland, where Louisa may have been born. There is a birth record for son Pierre (born 1871), who could possibly be the same as the 7-year-old Paul in the census. Since the names Pierre and Paul tend to go together, and there is no other child born in 1871, it is assumed that they are separate children.
The funeral was at Spanish Fort in the New Orleans West End. Friends of the Vitter and Cathalongne families were invited. (Marie Louise Vitter married Jean V. Cathalongne.)
There are a couple questions that need to be answered. The main one is whether Auguste's son Auguste Valentin Vitter is the same August Vitter who married Jeanne Eugenia Bonaparte Tinney in St. Mary's Parish on 12/21/1889. From all the coincidences, it seems that it was the case. Granddaughter Monta Vitter McLean seems to think so too. If so, then that would provide one branch of the Vitter-Tinney link. The other Vitter-Tinney link seems secure, as there is a birth record of Lelia Hortense Vitter, born 11/8/1864, as the daughter of Auguste Vitter and Victoire Henzenlen. (The mother's name is spelled differently for almost each of her 15 or so children.) The obituary for Lelia in the Daily Picayue on 9/22/1897 says the funeral is at the home of her brother, August Jr., 2435 Bienville St., near Rocheblave, in New Orleans.
There are two August Vitters in the Social Security death records. One was born 1/26/1885, died 7/15/1966, SS #363-54-9376, issued before 1951 in Michigan. The other, who is hypothesized to be the son of Auguste (August) Valentin, was born 5/30/1896, died 8/1971, SS #210-03-3299, issued before 1951 in Pennsylvania. See the record of Auguste Valentin Vitter for more information, and also related information about his brother Raymond Percy Vitter.

Public Library VEE 678 [17] Reference Number 4936 Notes - The information about the children of Auguste and Marie Victoire came from the 1880 census and the birth records of the City of New Orleans. The census records of 1880 apparently contain several typos. Some children are listed with the wrong age. For example, Arthur is listed as 5, but his N.O. birth record gives the date 3/25/1856, making him 23 or 24. Inclusion of those five children "fills the gap" in the impressive record of births by Marie Victoire, so it is conceivable that they are her children. It's also possible that she took a trip back to Switzerland, where Louisa was apparently born.
Marie Victoire's maiden name is listed as Hentzelin on her marriage license, but her name is listed in a variety of ways on the birth records of her children: Angelin, Angeline, Ondelslein, Henzerling, Henzenlen. (These names were listed in the index of births. So far I (Jeff Vitter) haven't checked the actual birth records. JSV 7/2000)

Histories Après le Aha! moment (et avant aussi!)
As highlighted in the history "The Aha! Moment That Led to This Website," Jeff Vitter made a big breakthrough in December 2000 when he discovered when, where, and how his Vitter ancestors came from Europe to the USA. Much correspondence behind the scenes led up to and beyond that discovery. This history gives an inside look at the correspondences that genealogists engage in and how what we understand grows (we hope!) with time.Relativity Research
The underlying theme of our website is research on relativity — our relatives pulsate outward in our time-space continuum in a series of gravitational waves spanning many generations and relationships! This page gives an overview of several family histories, beginning with Jeff Vitter's Aha! moment, which ultimately led to creation of this website. The Aha! Moment That Led to This Website
When Jeff Vitter was growing up in New Orleans, his parents A. L. Vitter Jr. and Audrey (née St. Raymond) Vitter would always tell the family about their trips to France as young children to meet relatives, but they didn't know many particulars beyond their grandparents, especially on my dad's paternal side. Jeff's Aha! moment came when he combined technologies — new and old — to discover how, when, and where the Vitters came to the USA from Europe.

This manuscript is a comprehensive and very entertaining account of the Vitter generations written by Jean-Pierre Vitter (Jeff Vitter's 4th cousin, 1x removed) in October 2002. It's easily translated, e.g., using Google Translate. The story starts with Jeff's 4th great grandfather Hérard Vitter, who moved from "l'Autriche Antérieure" to the town of Clerval in the Doubs region of France in the 1700s. Hérard's father in the old country was Mathieu Vitter, and his son Pierre is the one who emigrated from France to New Orleans in 1843. The big mystery that remained was exactly where Hérard Vitter came from originally. (See JPV's follow-on work, Le sang qui coule dans nos veines, for answers.)
