• Name Violate Valentine Vitter [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
Notes
• There is a Violate Vitter listed as a daughter in the 1880 census entry for Auguste Vitter. But there are so many children (namely, 14) listed for Auguste in the census and/or birth records that it's not clear that they're all his kids. There is a Violet Vitter listed in the marriage index, 1830-1900, of Orleans Parish; she married Charles Riguelmy in 1896. I'm supposing that Violate and Violet are the same person and that she's the daughter of Auguste Vitter.

There is also a Violet Vitter Wren, widow of Hayden Wilson Wren, who died in 1966, with four children, three grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. I'm also supposing that it's the same Violet Vitter. She's buried at Greenwood Cemetery. The funeral was at Bultman on St. Charles at Louisiana on Sunday 1/31/1966. It could be that this Violet is the daughter of August Valentin Vitter, son of Auguste Vitter.

The Wren family was invited to the funeral of Victoire Hentzelin, widow of Auguste Vitter, so there was a close connection between her Vitter and Wren families, which makes the chance likely that Victoire's daughter Violet was the one who married Hayden Wilson Wren.

Notes
• The information about the children of Auguste and Marie Victoire came from the 1880 census and the birth records of the City of New Orleans. The census records of 1880 apparently contain several typos. Some children are listed with the wrong age. For example, Arthur is listed as 5, but his N.O. birth record gives the date 3/25/1856, making him 23 or 24. Victor is listed as 10, but his N.O. birth record gives the date 8/11/1858, making him 11 or 12. There are no N.O. birth records for Charles (age 3), Violate (age 4), and Louisa (age 16, born in Switzerland according to census), and Eugène (age 19). Inclusion of those five children "fills the gap" in the impressive record of births by Marie Victoire, so it is conceivable that they are her children. It's also possible that she took a trip back to Switzerland, where Louisa was apparently born.

Marie Victoire's maiden name is listed as Hentzelin on her marriage license, but her name is listed in a variety of ways on the birth records of her children: Angelin, Angeline, Ondelslein, Henzerling, Henzenlen. (These names were listed in the index of births. So far I (Jeff Vitter) haven't checked the actual birth records. JSV 7/2000)

Après le Aha! moment (et avant aussi!)
Après le Aha! moment (et avant aussi!)
As highlighted in the history "The Aha! Moment That Led to This Website," Jeff Vitter made a big breakthrough in December 2000 when he discovered when, where, and how his Vitter ancestors came from Europe to the USA. Much correspondence behind the scenes led up to and beyond that discovery, including new information about Jeff's mom's side of the family in southwest France around Uzan (pronounced "u-ZHANG" in the local patois) and Anères. This history gives an inside look at the correspondences that genealogists engage in and how what we understand grows (we hope!) with time.

When Jeff Vitter was growing up in New Orleans, his parents A. L. Vitter Jr. and Audrey (née St. Raymond) Vitter would always tell the family about their trips to France as young children to meet relatives, but they didn't know many particulars beyond their grandparents, especially on my dad's paternal side. Jeff's Aha! moment came when he combined technologies — new and old — to discover how, when, and where the Vitters came to the USA from Europe.
