A resident of Ponchatoula, she died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2002, at Live Oak
Village, Hammond. She was 86 and a native of Brookhaven, Miss. Visitation
at Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home, Ponchatoula, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday. Visitation at first Baptist Church of Ponchatoula from 10 a.m.
until religious service at 2 p.m. Friday. Interment in Parklawn Memorial
Gardens. Survived by a daughter, Margaret Sue Varnado Bailey,
Ponchatoula; a step-daughter, Shirley Ann Vitter Darouse, Albany; a
stepson, R.W. "Bobby" Vitter Jr., Ponchatoula; a brother, Jay C. Potter,
Brookhaven; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceded in
death by her parents, Joseph Carl and Arie Hutson Potter; first husband,
Carl O. Varnado; second husband, R.W. Vitter Sr.; a sister, Irma Potter
Goodman; a brother, Carl Douglas Potter; and a grandson, Paul Bryant
Potter. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Ponchatoula.
She taught first grade in Ponchatoula for 25 years. She was a member of
Order of the Eastern Star, Kappa Kappa Iota, Delta Kappa Gamma,
Gardenettes and Strawberry Patch Quilters. In lieu of flowers, memorial
donations may be made to Hospice of the Delta, 100 Smart Place, Slidell,
