Louis Gerard Gruntz, Jr., Jefferson attorney, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2014, at the age of 67. He was born May 12, 1947, the only child of the late Audrey Casteix and Louis G. Gruntz. He is survived by his children, Louis G. Gruntz, III (Katie Northey), Cory Gruntz (Michelle Tanner), Rochelle Gruntz Heap (Jason), David Gruntz and Rebecca Gruntz Deroche (Bret). Grandfather of Connor, Andrew, Kay and Gerard Gruntz and Jackson, Nathan and Lucy Heap. Step grandfather of Sadie, Nick and Kaia Pobocik. He was a lifelong resident of Jefferson and a parishioner of St. Agnes Catholic Church. Louis was a graduate of Jesuit High School and Tulane University, School of Engineering. After a brief engineering career with American Cyanamid Co. in Waggaman from 1969-1976, he pursued a legal career and graduated from Loyola University Law School in 1974 with Law Review honors. He began his legal career in 1976 engaged in general civil practice and joined the staff of the Jefferson Parish Attorney's Office in 1981. He was promoted to Deputy Parish Attorney in 1989 and served in that position until his retirement. He was an unsuccessful candidate for State Representative in 1976, despite this loss he maintained his desire to be involved in the legislative process, he served as a legislative liaison for Jefferson Parish and was recognized for his legal expertise and assistance in having the Louisiana Governmental Claims Act enacted. He served as the President of the Louisiana Parish Attorney's Association from 1995 to 1997. In 1999 he was honored by Jefferson Parish and awarded the Joseph Yenni Award for Outstanding Service as a Jefferson Parish employee of the year. He retired from the Jefferson Parish Attorney's Office in 2011 after thirty (30) years, serving under seven (7) Parish Presidents. After his retirement, he was called back to public service in 2012; as an appointee of the Jefferson Parish Council Chairman, he served as chairman of the Jefferson's Home Rule Charter Advisory Board. Following his career with Jefferson Parish, he became of Counsel to the firm of Dwyer, Cambre, & Suffern, and served as special counsel for the Plaquemines Parish Council. In January 2014, he was drawn back to into public service and appointed city attorney of Kenner. He developed a deeper appreciation for his Dad, a veteran of the 712th Tank Bn., and other who served our country in World War II, after he and his Dad traveled to Europe tracing the battle route of the 712th. Following this trip he accompanied his parents to many reunions of the former 712th Tank Bn. Assoc., and the 90th Infantry Div. Assoc. and became an auxiliary member of each. This past spring, he published a book, "A Tank Gunner's Story" about his experiences. Louis was also an avid genealogist and spent many years tracing his ancestors and other relatives in his family tree. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans (Formally All Faiths), on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and again on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until time of Mass. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National World War II Museum.
