Ray Dean Bendorf, 80, Paola, formerly of louisburg , died March 24, 2009, at Life Care Center of Osawatomie.
Ray and his twin sister, Fay, were born March 28, 1928, in Louisburg, to Jake Bendorf and Martha Whitmore Bendorf.
He graduated from Bucyrus High School and served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954-1956.
On June 24, 1975, Ray was united in marriage to Betty Jenkins Harper in Miami, Okla.
He worked for Charles Dellinger of Bucyrus and and Jack Cooper Transport Co. as a truck driver for 35 Years.
A member and past master of the Louisburg Masonic Peace Lodge No. 243, he received his Masonic 50-year emblem in January. He also was life member of the Louisburg Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Scottish
rite. He was a member of the Abdellah Shrine Mounted Patrol, Order of the Eastern Star and the Louisburg Shrine Club.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold and a sister, Fay McLloyd.
Survivors include his wife, Betty, of the home; stepdaughter, Jeannette Mathena of Huntsville, Ala.; stepson Wayne Harper of Pleasanton; two steo-grandchildern; and one great-granddaughter.
Honorary pallbearers were the Abdellah Mounted Patrol.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Louisburg on Saturday, followed by a Masonic ceremony. Military honors and burial were at the Louisburg Cemetery. Arrangements were by Penwell-Gabel Paola Chapel. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Louisburg, KS., Louisburg Masonic Lodge, or the Abdellah Shrine.
Ray Dean and Betty Bendorf Ray Dean Bendorf was born March 28, 1928, at his parent's farm home in Wea Township, north of Louisburg, Kansas along with his twin sister Fay Ruth. He is the son of Jacob and Martha Whitmore Bendord. He helped his father farm with mules as a young boy and learned to be quite a "skinner." His first job was as a water boy for thrashers. He later worked a team in the oil fields. Ray was a good basketball player at Bucyrus High School in 1946. He also liked to play baseball. Ray likes horses and has "pulled ponies" several years. He has won many ribbons with his ponies in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Kansas. He won at the State Fair in Hutchinson, Kansas in 1969 with his black team George and Dan, of which he was quite proud. He always kept a good team and good harness. Another proud day was shen he won at his home town Labor Day pull in 1972 and 1973, with another team Dick and Rowdy. Ray married Betty Louise Jenkins Harper in June, 1975. Betty enjoys helping with the pulling horses chores and keeping the livestock while Ray is on the road. Ray and Betty are now raising registered Suffolk draft horses Shorthorn cattle. Betty also raise bobby calves, chickens and always has a big garden. Ray has been an "over-the-road" truck driver for Jack Cooper Transport Company of Kansas City for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, 1954-1956. He is a member of Masonic Peace Lodge 234 of Louisburg, Scottish Rite Bodies of KansasCity, Kansas, and Abdallah Shrine of Overland Park, Kansas, and participates in parades as a member of the Mounted Patrol. He is also a member of Kansas Draft Horse and Mule Association, Eastern Star Chapter 385, and is a charter member of Louisburg Shrine Club. Betty is a member of Eastern Star Chapter 384, Daughters of the Nile El Maat Temple 120, Daughters of the American Revolution, Marais des Cygnes Chapter of Paola, Miami County Historical Society and Miami County Genealogy Society. Betty has two children by a previous marriage: G. Wayne Harper, born December 11, 1952 at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington, and Jeaneatte Grace Harper Stokes, born January 20, 1958, in Kansas City Missouri, Ray and Betty enjoy one grandchild, Jeanette Elizabeth Stokes, born September 14, 1983, in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
