- [S1251] Find A Grave, James Martin “Mart” Willard.
In 1850 his father was living near his grandfather, Martin Willard on the border of Benton/Henry Counties, Mo. About 1855-60 they all moved southeast to Oregon County, MO.
Mart's father died in 1864 when he was 12 years old. The family was on a trip to Arkansas, probably to pick cotton, which was a common way to earn some money. William died along the way.
Mart married Sarah Elizabeth Hurst, Nov 16, 1873, Oregon Co, MO.
They had 6 children and Sarah died in 1890 in Oregon Co, Mo.
Mart was a preacher.
Abt 1891 Mart took his younger children on a train ride to Oregon to visit someone. (He had about 3 2nd cousins who lived there, but not sure if they were who he went to see.)
In 1892 (back in Oregon Co, Mo) Mart married widow Sallie Dunkin King. They were married by his cousin Rev. Joseph Martin Willard, at Mt. Pisgah Church in Oregon Co, Mo.
At some point Mart wanted to moved to Kansas to be near a cousin, Daniel David Willard. Sallie refused to move and leave her 5 children, so one day he left and never returned. She never heard from him again.
In 1900 he was in Kansas with daughters, Cordelia and Maudie.
In 1903 he was in Chuska, (Wagoner Co) Indian Territory (OK). His daughter Maud married there in 1904.
From 'Among the Hawks and Eagles' by Silas C. turnbo is this note: 'In December 1903 a man named James M. Willard was in the town of Chuska, Indian Territory. He is a son of William H. Willard and was born in Benton County, MO, and had lived several years in Douglas and Oregon counties, MO.'
In 1906 his niece, Alice Willard Stafford was also living in Chuska.
In 1909 Cordelia and Maudie, were back in Stafford, KS. near Dave Willard.
In 1910 James and daug Maud Smith were in Adair Co, Ok.
Daughter Maudie moved to Oregon. Mart died 1929 Salem General Hospital, Salem, Marion Co, OR.
He was buried in Rosedale Friends Cem, just south of Salem, OR (1/2 mile east of Rosedale).
