Mary Grinnen Schott passed away peacefully on February 16, 2022, at the age of 94. She was comfortably and lovingly surrounded at her bedside by her seven sons, as well as several daughters-in-law and grandchildren. Mary (Mama to her sons and daughters-in-law, and Grandma or Maw Maw to her grandchildren) was born in New Orleans in 1927. She graduated from Ursuline College in 1947 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. After college, Mary worked briefly before she was married to her loving husband, Arthur O. Schott, for 67 years. Mary's full-time job and devotion consisted of raising her family and managing a household of seven raucous sons, which she did tirelessly and without any complaints. One of Mary's special traits was that she never uttered a single negative word about anyone (with the only exceptions being a few politicians every now and then). She was always kind to everyone, even when she had to "kindly" discipline her sons (her boys as she liked to call them). Mary was always there for her sons, which included, but was by no means limited to, driving carpool, volunteering in the school library, serving as mother's club room mother and cub scout den mother, cheering her boys and their teams at track meets and football, baseball, and basketball games, and cooking delicious home-cooked meals every week night and on Sundays. Saturday nights were reserved for dinner at restaurants with her husband and dinner-club friends; on those nights the boys ate TV dinners and Jiffy-Pop popcorn, after which they rearranged furniture in the house to make room for indoor football games. Mary knew of those games but did not care as long as no one was hurt. After Mary finished raising her sons, she did volunteer work delivering Meals on Wheels to the elderly and infirm and serving as a docent at Longue Vue Gardens. Mary was a parishioner of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lake Vista for more than 56 years, where she also served as a member of the Ladies Sodality for many years. Mary is survived by her seven sons, Arthur, Jr. (Patricia Delgadillo), John (Mala Newman), Gerard, Stephen (Pamela Keenan), Christopher (Judy Cannella), Kevin (Peggy Shirer,) and Richard (Linda Cuellar). She also had an eighth son, Philip, who died from an illness as a toddler. Mary is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. Mary is predeceased by her husband, Arthur O. Schott, her parents, Louise Kammer and Thomas Grinnen, and her brother, Thomas (Buddy) Grinnen, Jr. Visitation will be at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 6666 Spanish Fort Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana, on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., followed by a funeral mass at the same location at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, but graveside space for friends will be very limited due to the large size of Mary's family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Pius X Catholic Church.
