'Take 'Er Down!': The Story of Commander Gilmore
"Take 'Er Down!": The Story of Commander Gilmore
Commander Gilmore was a bona fide hero of World War II. His fateful words as he made the ultimate sacrifice are uttered still today by every submarine commander in the U. S. Navy.

    1. [S307] Jeffrey & Sharon Vitter, Family Database of Vitter-Weaver Family, (Name: Self; Location: New Orleans, Louisiana, USA; Date: Since 1996;), "Take 'Er Down!": The Story of Commander Gilmore.
One of the most notable stories of individual heroism in World War II belongs to Commander Howard Walter Gilmore, husband of Hilda (née St. Raymond) Gilmore, Jeff Vitter's 1st cousin 1x removed. During a surface battle at sea while commander on the submarine USS Growler, Commander Gilmore was hit by machine-gun fire. Unable to get below in time, but determined to save his crew, he yelled his now-famous final order, "Take 'er down!" — a command since ubiquitous in Navy lore and used routinely by submarine commanders. For his ultimate sacrifice, he posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration.

    7. [S1251] Find A Grave, Hilda St. Raymond Gilmore.
Jeff Vitter submitted details to FindAGrave to add to the entry: My 2nd cousin Hilda St. Raymond Gilmore is the widow of the famous World War II hero Commander Howard Gilmore. (See his history, which includes a photo of Hilda and children accepting his posthumous Medal of Honor, at https://vitter.org/familytree/histories/HowardGilmore.php .) I went to the grave personally today to verify that Hilda and her daughter Vernon Jeanne Darleen Gilmore are both buried there in St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 in New Orleans (buried in 1988 and 1986, respectively). Their names are inscribed on the front of the tomb, right behind the red plant in the photo of the tomb on Hilda’s son Howard Jr.’s FindAGrave page.
