Our Jacob STUTZMAN was born, 2 Mar 1778, son of Daniel STUTZMAN, who remained on the home farm of his father John Jacob, whose Will was probated in 1776. Our Daniel STUTZMAN, father of Jacob, had proposed to put negro slaves on the farm. Our Jacob, being opposed to slavery, left home in the spring of 1798. After spending nearly two years in Morrison's Cove, Bedford County, he came to the Conemaugh Valley in the fall of 1799. He found work among the farmers and in a distillary for about two years. In the fall of 1803 he married Susan ULLERY, the daughter of Rev. Samuel ULLERY, a pioneer Dunkard preacher. They started life in a cabin in Benscreek, where the distillery was at that time. In the fall of 1804 he bought the farm on which the first two districts of the Eighth Ward are now built --131.5 acresf rom Jacob TROYER, for which he paid $575.00. He held the farm for five or six eyars, then sold it to William PROCTOR for $900.00, who in turn sold it to Isaac PROCTOR. In 1815 he bought the farm back again from Isaac PROCTOR. he lived on this farm for forty years. Our city was then a snall village between Stoneycreek and the Conemaugh Rivers. On the south side of the Stoneycreek lay the farm previously owned by David STUTZMAN, and on which the Fifth and Sixth Wards are built.
Grandfather Jacob STUTZMAN soon became the neighborhood shoemarker, as well as a farmer and preacher. As soon as crops were taken care of he would start to make shoes for the neighbors. In this way he and Grandmother raised a family of seven boys: Daniel, Abraham, Jacob, John, David, Samuel and Stephen; and four daughters: Elizabeth, Hannah, mary and Susan. The family all grew up to manhood and womanhood on the home farm, except David, who died at age of two years and some months.
Both Grandfather Jacob STUTZMAN and wife belonged to the dunkard Chruch before they were married. About the year 1828, Grandfather Jacob was chosen as Minister in his Church. In 1828, when his son Abraham, my father, married Sarah Schrock, she was a member of the Amish Church. About a year after their marriage, they both joined the Dunkard Church.
In 1839, Abraham STUTZMAN was also chosen to the Ministry in the dunkard Church. For twenty-five years he rode his saddle horse to the Sunday morning services, the different appointments being anywhere from five to fifteen miles distant. In the late fall and winter he had to get his horse fed and ready to start out long before daylight to reach some of his appointments. He was blacksmith by trade, and was the first blacksmith that made a line of edge toold for the neighbors in this section. makeing axes, htchets, butcher knives, pocket knives, plane bits, chisels and cow bells.
A.F. STUTZMAN, the writer of this history, and the youngest of Rev. Abraham STUTZMAN'S family, lived at the home with his father and mother until he was past twenty-three years of age. He did not remember of one day in all that time that father and mother did not have their evening family devotions by reading a chapter from the family Bible followed by a season of Prayer.
If any of the Posterity of our Ancestors Rev. Jacob STUTZMAN and wife Susan ULLERY STUTZMAN want to see their graves and monument, they can see them on the A.F. STUTZMAN plot in Grandview Cemetery. Mr. STUTZMAN being a grandson of our ancestor Jacob STUTZMAN.
