    3. [S1251] Find A Grave, Samuel Shinn, Sr.
Son of Thomas Atkensen Shinn and wife, Mary Stockton Shinn, of Burlington County New Jersey. Date of birth information verified in U.S., Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol I–VI, 1607-1943 and also verified by his father's Will signed on 8 Nov 1694. Listed in Will are wife, Mary, Son Thomas and expected child ( Mary was pregnant with Samuel when her husband died). Samuel was born Feb 1695 after his father had died in Nov. 1694. Source New Jersey, Abstract of Wills, 1670-1817
      -------------------------------------------------
First wife was Sarah Schooley, daughter of Thomas & Mary Schooley of Burlington County, NJ per U.S. Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935

They were the parents of at least one child, Alice Schooley Shinn, born 20 Jan 1721, who married Thomas Stevenson on 20 Mar 1740 in Burlington NJ per U.S. Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935. There is no record of Alice and her husband and family moving south when her father moved.

Sarah Schooley Shinn died between 1733 and 1735 in Burlington County NJ and she is buried there.
      -------------------------------------------------

Second wife was Provided Gaskill whom he married around April 1737 when he was called up by Burlington Meeting for remarrying so soon after his first wife's death. He pleaded that he needed help with his family of small children and he was forgiven. He and Provided Gaskill had one child, Samuel, in May 1738 and Provided died soon thereafter.

      --------------------------------------------
Third wife was Abigail Ury, born 1696 in NJ per U.S. Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1935. The Quaker Meeting Records list their marriage in Burlington County NJ but does not give the date although their year of marriage is shown as 1740 in German Reformed Church where she was a member and where they married.

They were the parents of at least 10 children all of whom were named in their father's Will: Samuel, Thomas, Mary, Macey, Leah, Rachel, Sarah, Hannah, Isaac, Joseph

Samuel and his family are shown living in Burlington County New Jersey until at least 1839 when he is shown as having voted in an election in that county.

There is speculation that Samuel and Abigail lived in Hopewell, Virginia for a while after moving from New Jersey and before moving on to North Carolina. Several of their children are said to have been born in Hopewell but no written documentation has been presented to prove that assertion. The Quaker Meeting Records are very thorough and precise so any children born in Hopewell, Virginia would have been recorded in the Friends Meeting Minutes there. No Quaker Meeting Records have been located for them after they left New Jersey. There was an active Friends Meeting House in Frederick County, VA near Hopewell at 604 Hopewell Road (formerly State Route 672). Clear Brook, VA 22624 at the time the family supposedly lived there.

By 1855, Samuel and Abigail are shown living in Rowan County NC where they remained for the rest of their lives. Specifically, they are shown in Rowan County NC in North Carolina, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1790-1890 for the years 1755, 1759 and 1761 before Samuel's death.

Samuel's Will was Probated in Rowan County NC per Rowan County NC Will Book, Vol A-B, 1753-1797.

Some accounts show the family living in the Coldwater Community of Cabarrus County NC. However, this is incorrect for several reasons:

      1. Cabarrus County NC was formed from Mecklenburg County NC in 1792. None of Cabarrus County was formed from Rowan County.

      2. By the time Cabarrus County was formed in 1792, Samuel and Abigail had died.

      3. If they had lived in current day Cabarrus County NC, the records from 1855 on would have shown them in Mecklenburg County -- not Cabarrus. There are no records showing them as living anywhere in North Carolinaexcept Rowan County.

An old source for information on the Shinn family is the book, "Thomas Stevenson of London, England & His Descendants" by John Rudderow Stevenson, published in 1902 so it is out of copyright. There are errors in the book but it is worth a look.

Another source is "The History of the Shinn Family in Europe and America", author unknown.
