My father, Elmer J. Guengerich, was a remarkable individual. He was of strict Amish-Mennonite heritage with a mixture of early pioneer spirit. My great grandparents, Daniel P. and Susanna (Miller) Guengerich, came to this territory shortly before Iowa became a state. "The Indians had ceded their rights only the year before, and the poles of their wigwams were yet standing in many places.”
My grandparents, Jacob D. and Lydia (Gingerich) Guengerich, after several moves bought a farm in 1869 along Deer Creek, built a mill, and let its waters furnish power for a creamery. At this place my father was born on July 11, 1870, less than 24 years after Iowa was admitted to the Union.
It was a time when settlers were still pouring into Iowa; a time when only a few inventions were coming in.
In these early times, making a living was Father's chief training. He was the second in a family of thirteen children. Susanna, the oldest child, was born February 2, 1869 and died March 8, 1880, age 11 years, 1 month, 6 days. Father then became the oldest of 12 children. He learned the meaning of work. “For hard work on the farm, beginners received three cents an hour. If you were very good at farming you got nine cents for every hour's work.”
But Father's more formal training was at Hickory Grove country school. Most important of all, he received Bible instruction daily from his parents. So my father's rigid training made him practical, resourceful, proficient for his time.
On January 27, 1894, my father and mother were married by Bishop William K. Miller. The wedding party traveled by bob-sled through deep snow from Upper Deer Creek Church to Mother's home at Wassonville near Wellman for the wedding dinner and the festivity that followed. Mother's maiden name was Magdalene A. Yoder, daughter of Noah D. and Savilla (Gnagey) Yoder. Her wedding dress was of brown, wool serge.
After working one year at Wassonville Mill, my father turned to farming as his life's vocation first in Iowa, then in Missouri (1898-1914) then back to Iowa at which time they united with the East Union Mennonite Church. In 1926 my parents retired to Kalona.
Both passed away in 1942, Father on June 25 and Mother on November 27, with burial in the East Union cemetery.
