Memorial of Jacob Hertzler.
Jacob Hertzler was born in 1703, of Swiss par-
ents, in Switzerland, Europe. Occupation, farmer
and minister of the Amish Mennonite Church. He
married in Europe, and with his first wife had one
son named John. His wife died and was buried in
Europe. Jacob Hertzler then married his second
wife, Catharine ; the children by this marriage were
two sons and one daughter. Jacob Hertzler with
his family emigrated from Switzerland to the Palat-
inate, in France, and after residing there for
some years, during the reign of Louis XV, a king
of France, on account of being persecuted for his
religious faith, being a Mennonite, Jacob Hertzler
and family emigrated from there to America, taking
the route via Rotterdam, Holland, and Plymouth,
England. He came over in the ship St. Andrew,
James Abercrombie, Master, from Rotterdam,
landing in Philadelphia, Pa., Sep. 9th, 1719. J
From there he went to Berne T., Lancaster Co.,
* Palatinate, a province in the north east of France, on the
river Rhine, adjoining Baden. In 1815), when the allied armv
defeated Napoleon, the treaty of Peace signed at Paris, on the
20th of November, it was ceded to Baden. It is now a
province in Bavaria in the German Empire. See Markam's

Pa., now Upper Berne T., Berks Co., Pa., two
miles west of Hamburg, on the direct road leading
to Harrisburg. and purchased from the proprieta-
ries of Pennsylvania, Richard and Thomas Penn,
in Philadelphia, warrant granted to Jacob Hertzler,
January 9th, 1750, for 182 acres, '"^0 perches of land
surveyed May 14th, 1767. Price one dollar and
twenty-five cents per acre. This tract was named
Contentment. Also a warrant granted Oct. 13th,
1752, for 110 acres, 1 30 perches ; a warrant granted
Aug. 5th, 1765, for 36 acres, 36 perches ; a warrant
granted Dec. 2d, 1766, for 44 acres, 95 perches;
and a warrant granted June 23d, 1773, for 30 acres,
33 perches. These several contiguous tracts in the
whole contained 404 acres, and 4 perches, and an
allowance of six per cent, for roads, all set with
timber in a wilderness, which he improved.
On August the 30th, 1773, Jacob Hertzler di-
vided his land between his children. John received
the farm near Moortown, in Centre T., Berks Co.,
Pa. ; his son Jacob received 190 acres of the home
farm; his son Christian received 169 acres of the
home farm ; his daughter Fanny, married to John
Kauffman, received the residue of the home farm,
with some more land joining by purchase.
Catharine Hertzler died between August 30th.
1773, and March 4th, 1774. Jacob Hertzler died
in 1786, some time after March 20th. They are
both buried in the Amish Congregation Burying-
ground, two miles west of Hamburg, joining the
home farm. There are no tombstones to mark the
graves where our progenitors lie.

1. FIRST GENERATION.
Jacob Hertzler, post office address when he
died, was Hamburg, Berks Co., Pa.; his children
born in Switzerland, and Palatine, a province of
France, Europe, are,
(1) John Hertzler married to Veronica Reich-
enbach.
(2) Jacob Hertzler, married to Barbara Yoder.
(3) Fanny Hertzler. born ; died in 1819:
married to John Kauffiiian, born ; died in
1843 ; occupation, farmer. Their children are, two
sons and four daughters. John Kauffiiian and
family moved from Upper Berne T.. Berks Co.,
Pa., to Somerset Co., Pa., removed to the vicin-
ity of Dayton, Ohio. Where their descendants
are residing is not known to the writer.
(4) Christian Hertzler, married to Elisabeth
Yoder.
* .John Hertzler was a sun of Jacob Hertzler by his
first marriage. His first wife's name not known to the
writer and his second wife's maiden name
