      1920

      Funeral services of Thomas N. Tinney, 84, who died Wednesday in Dallas at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Williams, (Aunt Florence Magnuson) were conducted at the grave in Old Bay View Cemetery, Friday afternoon at 3:30 O'clock by Reverend Frank B. Buchanan, pastor of the First Methodist Church.

      The pall bearers were C. A. Mealy, John Hull, Charles Land, Henry Weidemuller, Robert Hall and L. D. Berry. (Could L. D. Berry have been kin to Sara Berry?}

      Besides the relatives the funeral was attended by a large number of the older residents of the city. Mr. Tinney is survived by two daughters, Miss Molly Tinney of Galveston (Aunt Molly) and Mrs. Williams
      (Aunt Florence) of Dallas, also three sons, Fony Tinney of Galveston (George H. Tinney's Father),
      Milton Tinney of Chickasha, Ok. (second marriage) and Edward Ben Tinney of Oklahoma City, OK.
      (second marriage). Second Wife was Rosa Canales. Mrs. M. J. McDonough of San Antonio, TX. a
      sister and William A. Tinney of Benevides a brother survive.

      Mr. Tinney was a pioneer resident of Corpus Christi coming to what was then Kinney's ranch, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward B. Tinney, in 1853. The family came by steamboat to New Orleans, thence to Indianola in Matagorda county, and eventually to Corpus Christi. He was one of the pioneer newspaper men in Corpus Christi and Duval county, being employed on the Corpus Christi Ranchers,
      Corpus Christi Free Press and other early publications with Eli T. Merriman and others. He was publisher in 1877 or 1878 of the San Diego Gazette, Being associated with W. C. Bowen, later publisher of the Cotulla Ledger.

      During the war between the states he was a lieutenant in Lee's heavy artillery. Later he and his whole command were hemmed in on lower Mustang Island by the federals and compelled to surrender. He was engaged in the only real fight that ever took place in this city between the federals and confederates.

      The family residence for many years was in the Rincon on North Beach where remained until a few years ago the Salt Cedar Grove.

      We shown T. N. Tinney as probably buried in Old Bayview Cemetery as stated in obit. The inital web site was built off of an early report by Ward & Brooks which did not have access to later obits. They only used lists and records compiled prior to 1919. There is no other Old Bayview Cemetery however, there is a New Bayview Cemetery. Nevertheless, because of his obit and the presence of other Tinneys in the cemetery it seems most probable that Thomas Nathaniel Tinney is indeed in Old Bayview Cemetery without any grave marker.

      The State of Texas: To the sheriff or other lawful officer of said county, greetings: Whereas on the 19th day of April A.D. 1858, Sarah M. Tinney, formerly Sarah M. Berry, filed in my office her petition against said Edward B. Tinney and Affidavit that defendant is not a resident of this State & C., said petition representing that on the 6th day of June 1838, she intermarried with said Edward B. Tinney in Morgan Co., Ill, where they lived happily, that they removed to Texas about the 15th day of March 1853, that soon after their arrival here, a series of abuses were commenced by her said husband, by offering to inflict corporal punishment, that for the love of her children she remained with him, hoping that he might change his course of conduct towards her, but vainly, he became more abusive, and drank excessively, that on the 24th of Dec. 1855, he abandoned her, having first attempted to kill a man known as Little Red, that he has been absent more than three years, before the commencement of this suit, and is still absent, that the outrages offered to her are such as to render their living longer together insupportable, that she has been credibly informed, that he is living in Adultery with another woman in the State of Louisana. She prays that said Edward B. Tinney be cited by publication to appear and answer said petition, before the Hon. District Court of said county, at the next term to be held in the City of Corpus Christi, on the 8th Monday after the 1st Monday of April A. D. 1858, that said Court grant her a divorce from the bond of matrimony, and the custody of her minor children, Martha J. and Sarah G. Tinney (note that this is the alternate name of "Cerro Gordo"--MAH), Samuel H. and William Tinney, and such other relief as the case may require.
      The above petition is published in the Weekly Nueces Valley of May 29, 1858 on page 3 and column 4.
