    • OBIT: BOLIVAR BREEZE OCT 22 1908; DEATH OF A PIONEER * MRS MERCIA CHAP IN DAVIE WIDOW OF JOSEPH DAVIE PIONEER BOLIVAR PHOTOGRAPHER, DIED ON SA TURDAY AGED 79 YEARS * MRS MERICA CHAPIN DAVIE AGED 78, DIED AT THE HOM E OF HER DAUGHTER MRS JENNIE THOMAS IN SCIO, SATURDAY EVENING AFTER AN I LLNESS OF SEVEN WEEKS. DEATH RESULTED FROM THE INFIRMITIES OF AGE. THE B ODY WAS BROUGHT TO BOLIVAR ON MONDAY AND SERVIES WERE HELD AT THE M E C HURCH MONDAY AFTERNOON. THE BURIAL WAS AT THE BOLIVAR CEMETERY. MRS DA VIE WAS BORN IN OTSELIC, CHENANGO COUNTY, NY NOV 2 1829 AND CAME TO BOL IVAR WITH HER PARENTS MR AND MRS MOSES CHAPIN IN 1831 WHEN SHE WAS TWO Y EARS OLD THE CHAPIN FAMILY WERE BOLIVAR PIONEERS AND IT WAS MRS DAVIES M OTHER WHO BUILT THE FIRST FRAME HOUSE IN BOLIVAR IN 1847 OF CLEAR PINE. T HIS HOUSE IS NOW A PART OF THE LOUIS SEIBERT RESIDENCE ON FRIENDSHIP ST REET AND AT THAT TIME AND FOR MANY YEARS AFTER, STOOD ON MAIN STREET ON T HE PRESENT SITE OF THE SIEBERT DRUG STORE . MRS DAVIE'S GIRLHOOD WAS PA SSED IN BOLIVAR, IN FACT ALL OF HER LIFE, EXCEPT A FEW YEARS SPENT IN N EW YORK, SYRACUSE AND UTICA. SHE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE DECEMBER 24 185 0 TO JOSEPH DAVIE WHO DIED IN 1899. ON THEIR WEDDING TRIP THEY DROVE TO H ORNELLSVILLE, THE THEN NEAREST RAILROAD POINT TO ENJOY A WEDDING JOURNE Y ON THE STEAM CARS, MAKING THE TRIP TO NEW YORK. MR DAVIE WAS A PHOTOG RAPHER AND SECURED EMPLOYMENT IN THE STUDIO-THEY CALLED THEM GALLERIES I N THOSE DAYS- OF SARONY, THEN THE LEADING PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE UNITED ST ATES. MR DAVIE ALSO CONDUCTED GALLERIES IN UTICA AND SYRACUSE. AFTER TE N YEARS OF LIFE IN THE CITIES MR AND MRS DAVIE RETURNED TO BOLIVAR WHER E MR DAVIE CONDUCTED A GALLERY FOR MANY YEARS, MAKING A SPECIALTY OF OU TDOOR WORK, USING WHAT WAS KNOWN AS THE WET PLATE PROCESS. MANY PICTURE S TAKEN BY MR DAVIE WILL BE FOUND TODAY IN THE ALBUMS OF THE PIONEER FA MILIES OF ALLEGANY COUNTY. MR DAVIE FOR 49 YEARS OWNED WHAT IS NOW THE B ROWN FARM IN MILLER HOLLOW, AND FOR A GENERATION OR MORE IT WAS KNOWN A S THE DAVIE HOMESTEAD. SIX CHILDREN WERE BORN TO MR AND MRS DAVIE. FIVE O F WHEM SURVIVE. THEY ARE MRS ELLA WIGHTMAN OF WIRT, SAMUEL D T DAVIE OF F RIENDSHIP, MRS CARRIE COWLES OF BOLIVAR, MRS MARY THOMAS OF CUBA AND MR S JENNIE THOMAS OF SCIO. THE ELDEST CHILD LAVIENIA DIED IN 1871, AGED 1 9. ALL OF THE CHILDREN VISITED MRS DAVIE THE WEEK BEFORE DEATH CAME AND A LL WERE IN ATTENDANCE AT THE FUNERAL. MRS DAVIE WAS A KINDLY WOMAN OF T HE STURDY TYPE OF CHARACTER THAT WAS SO TYPICAL OF PIONEER WOMEN. SHE W AS A MEMBER OF THE BAPTIST CHURCH IN RICHBURG IN PIONEER DAYS AND LATER F OUND IT MORE CONVENIENT TO ATTEND THE M E CHURCH IN BOLIVAR. THERE WAS A P RAYER BY REV BRESBEY AT THE HOUSE OF HER DAUGHTER IN SCIO, MONDAY MORNI NG BEFORE THE FUNERAL PARTY STARTED FOR BOLIVAR, WHERE SERVICES WERE HE LD AT THE M E CHURCH AT ONE O'CLOCK. THE CHOIR SANG THREE FAVORITE HYMN S OF MRS DAVIE'S; "NEVER ALONE: NEARER MY GOD TO THEE AND SAFE IN THE A RMS OF JESUS." THE SERVICE WAS CONDUCTED BY REV G A BOND PASTOR OF THE C HURCH. MANY OLD FRIENDS OF THE DEAD ATTENDED THE SERVICES, SOME DRIVING L ONG DISTANCES. THE BEARERS WERE D C MILLIS, JOHN CRANDALL, C E LESUER, J OHN MILLARD, ALFRED MEAD AND E W COWLES. FOUR GENERATIONS WERE PRESENT A T THE SERVICE INCLUDING TEN GRANDCHILDREN AND TWO GREAT GRANDCHILDREN.
