      OBIT: CEDAR RAPIDS GAZETTE FEB 26 1937; [ FLOYD A DAVIE'S DEATH UNDER T RAIN DECLARED ACCIDENTAL ]. THE DEATH OF FLOYD A DAVIE 129 9TH ST NW WH O WAS KILLED FRIDAY ABOUT 2PM TWO BLOCKS WEST OF THE NORTHWESTERN DEPOT I N LISBON WHEN HE FELL UNDER THE WHEELS OF A WESTBOUND FREIGHT TRAIN ON W HICH HE WAS CONDUCTOR WAS PRONOUNCED ACCIDENTAL SATURDAY BY DR B L KNIG HT, LINN COUNTY CORONER. DR KNIGHT INVESTIGATED DAVIE'S DEATH AND SAID N O INQUEST WILL BEHELD.OFFICIALS OF THE NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD SATURDAY B EGAN AN INVESTIGATIONT CARS WERE BEING EXAMINED AT BEVERLY AND STATEMEN TS TAKEN. DR KNIGHT SAID HE HAD BEEN INFORMED THE TRAIN HAD STOPPED AT L ISBON AND DAVIE GOT OFF TO SIGNAL THE ENGINEER AND THAT HE MAY HAVE FAL LEN AFTER BOARDING THE TRAIN. MR DAVIE WAS 58 AND HAD BEEN WITH THE NOR TH WESTERN RAILROAD SINCE SEP 2 1909 JOINING THE LINE AT CLINTON. HE BE CAME A CONDUCTOR OCT 24 1914. MR DAVIE CAME TO CEDAR RAPIDS FROM CLINTO N IN 1929 WITH HIS WIFE AND SEVEN CHILDREN WHO SURVIVE. THE CHILDREN AR E JUNIOR 5, BOBBIE 9, BILLY 11, HATTIE 13, SARAH 16, ORVILLE 17 AND HEN RY 18 ALL AT HOME. IN ADDITION, MR DAVIE IS SURVIVED BY TWO BROTHERS, F RED G DAVIE REGIONAL BOY SCOUT EXECUTIVE WITH HEADQUARTERS IN LINCOLN N E AND ALFRED E OF HOLLYWOODCA, AN ADOPTED SON EDWARD OF CLINTON AND A S ISTER MRS L E SCHMITT , PORTLAND OR. A BROTHER AND SISTER OF MR DAVIE D IED IN INFANCY. MR DAVIE WAS BORN IN BOLIVAR NY THE SON OF GEORGE A AND A MELIA DAVIE. THE FAMILY CAME TO CLINTON IN 1878. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE M ASONIC ORDER AT CLINTON AND THE RAILWAY TRAINMEN AT CEDAR RAPIDS. FUNER AL SERVICES WILL BE HELD IN THE TEAHEN FUNERAL HOME AT 11 AM MONDAY IN C HARGE OF THE REV CHARLES L EDWARDS. BURIAL WILL BE IN LINWOOD CEMETERY. F RIENDS MAY CALL AT THE CHAPEL.

      OBIT: MT VERNON NEWS FEB 1937: [ CONDUCTOR FALLS UNDER TRAIN HERE ] *CE DAR RAPIDS MAN WAS KILLED AT LISBON FRIDAY AFTERNOON* FLOYD A DAVIE FRE IGHT ONDUCTOR ON THE C&NW RAILROAD LOST HIS LIFE AT ABOUT TWO O'CLOCK F RIDAY AFTERNOON WHEN HE FELL UNDER AN EXTRA FREIGHT TRAIN AS IT WAS LEA VING LISBON AFTER STOPPING FOR WATER AND THE CUSTOMARY INSPECTION FOR W HICH ALL FREIGHT TRAINS STOP THERE. EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED OR HOW THE AC CIDENT OCCURRED WILL NEVER BE KNOWN. MR DAVIE WAS CONDUCTOR ON A WEST B OUND EXTRA FREIGHT WHICH LEFT LISBON AT 1:58 PM. WHEN LAST SEEN HE HAD G IVEN THE HIGH-BALL FROM NEAR THE TWENTIETH CAR ON THE TRAIN. AS THE FIR ST TWENTY CARS WERE TO SET OUT AT BEVERLY. IT WAS PRESUMED BY THE TRAIN C REW THAT HE PLANNED TO RIDE THE NINETEENTH OR TWENTIETH CAR INTO BEVERL Y. HE MIGHT HAVE LOST HIS BALANCE AND FALLEN UNDER THE TRAIN OR HAD A H EART ATTACK OR A FAINTING SPELL. LEE CRELLY, LISBON AGENT AND OSCAR REA SMORE WATER PUMPER BOTH WATCHED THE TRAIN PULL OUT BUT DID NOT SEE THE C ONDUCTOR ON THE TWENTIETH CAR. GEORGE BITTLE WHO PASSED THE LISBON DEPO T WALKING WEST ON THE C&NW TRACKS TOWARD MR VERNON JUST AS THE WAY CAR O N THE TRAIN CLEARED THE WASHINGTON ST CROSSING FOUND MR DAVIE A FEW MIN UTES LATER FIVE RAIL LENGTHS WEST OF THE CROSSING. THE BODY FIRST LOOKE D LIKE A BUNDLE OF RAGS. NEXT HE SAW A LEG AND THEN SAW THE OBJECT WAS A M AN. HE RUSHED TO THE FRANKS LUMBER OFFICE AND DR GARDNER WAS CALLED. TH E BODY WAS MOVED FROM BETWEEN THE RAILS TO THE EDGE OF THE RIGHT OF WAY A ND LEFT UNTIL CORONER BEN KNIGHT WAS SUMMONED FROM CEDAR RAPIDS. HE STA TED THE DEATH WAS PLAINLY ACCIDENTAL AND AN INQUEST WOULD NOT BE NECESS ARY. THE BODY WAS THEN TAKEN TO THE JOHNSTON FUNERAL HOME IN MOUNT VERN ON. THE CREW ON THE TRAIN DID NOT KNOW OF THE ACCIDENT TO MR DAVIE UNTI L THE TRAIN REACHED BEVERLY. *VERY ACCOMODATING* LEE CRELLY IDENTIFIED M R DAVIE. HE FREQUENTLY WAS CONDUCTOR ON THE WAY FREIGHT AND BOTH MR CRE LLY AND JOHN KIJMO AGENT AT MOUNT VERNON SAY THAT MR DAVIE WAS THE MOST A CCOMODATING MAN WHO HAD CHARGE OF THAT TRAIN. HE WAS CONSCIENTIOUS AND A CCOMODATING AND DIFFERENT FROM SOME OF THE TRAINMEN WHOSE MAIN INTEREST S EEMS TO BE TO GET TO THE END OF THE RUN AND QUIT WORK. MR DAVIE WAS 58 A ND HAD BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD SINCE SE 2 1909. HE B EGAN WORK AT CLINTON AND MOVED TO CEDAR RAPIDS IN 1929. HE WAS SET UP A S A CONDUCTOR ON OCT 24 1919. DURING THE DEPRESSION HE SEVED AS A BRAKE MAN FOR A TIME . HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE AND SEVEN CHILDREN RANGING F ROM FIVE TO 18 YRS IN AGE. FUNERAL SERVICES WERE HELD IN THE TEAHAN FUN ERAL HOME ON MONDAY MORNING IN CHARGE OF REV CHARLES F EDWARDS. BURIAL W AS IN LINWOOD CEMETERY.

DAVEY HAD A FREIGHT "RUN" OUT OF CLINTON A ND WELL KNOWN HERE AMONG THE NORTH WESTERN RAILROAD MEN. HE WAS A MARRI ED MAN. PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO PLANS FOR HIS FUNERAL WERE NOT RECEIVED H ERE.

      YOUR WIRE RECEIVED A SHORT TIME AGO AND I HASTEN TO WRITE YOU. FORTUNAT ELY I WAS AT DES MOINES YESTERDAY AND CAME OVER AS SOON AS I RECEIVED W ORD FROM MY SECRETARY. THE NEWSPAPER CLIPPING WHICH I WILL ENCLOSE CONT AIN ALL THE INFORMATION THAT IS AVAILABLE. I HAVE TALKED TO THE C&NW CL AIM AGENT AND ALSO THE CORONER AND APPARENTLY IT WAS AN ACCIDENT. FLOYD W AS RETURNING FROM CLINTON WITH 68 CARS AND AT LISBON THEY STOPPED FOR O RDERS AND FLOYD TOOOK THE BILLS AND STARTED FORWARD TO RIDE THE HEAD EN D AS THEY WERE GOING TO SET OUT 20 CARS AT THE NEXT TOWN EIGHT MILES FU RTHER WEST. HE GAVE THE ENGINEER THE HIGH BALL TO GO AHEAD AND THAT'S T HE LAST ANYONE ON THE TRAIN SAW OF HIM. IT IS THOUGHT HE ATTEMPTED TO G O FROM THE LADDER ON THE SIDE OF THE BOX CAR TO THE PLATFORM OF A TANK C AR AND SLIPPED ON THE ICE AND FELL BETWEEN THE CARS. HE WAS FOUND ABOUT T EN MINUTES LATER ABOUT FIVE HUNDRED YDS WEST OF THE LISBON DEPOT. I DO N'T KNOW WHAT THE RAILROAD WILL DO FOR HIS WIFE AS IT IS AGAINST THE R ULES TO RIDE THE TRAINS ANYWHERE BUT IN THE CABOOSE OR ENGINE. HOWEVER A LL TRAIN CREWS DO IT AND THE COMPANY MAY MAKE SOME SETTLEMENT. FLOYD CA RRIED TWO SMALL POLICIES WITH THE JOHN HANCOCK CO AMOUNTING TO $960.00 W ITH DOUBLE BENEFIT FOR ACCIDENTAL DEATH AND THIS WITH HIS LAST PAYCHECK I S ALL THEY HAVE. I HAVE BEEN ON THE GO ALL DAY ARRANGING FOR THE SERVIC ES WHICH WILL BE HELD MONDAY AT 11. I SAW FLOYD LAST AT MARSHALLTOWN IN O CTOBER , ACCIDENTALY MET HIM AT THE DEPOT AS I WAS WAITING FOR A TRAIN. I P LANED TO COME OVER HERE NEXT WEEK ON BUSINESS AND LOOKED FORWARD TO HAV ING A VISIT WITH HIM. THE PICTURE IS THE PAPER IS NOT VERY GOOD BUT IT I S THE ONLY ONE WE COULD FIND THIS MORNING THAT COULD BE USED. I WIRED B ESSIE THE SAME AS I DID YOU BUT HAVE NOT HAD AN ANSWER, DOUBT IF I WILL . I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HER IN YEARS. TOMORROW I WILL ARRANGE FOR FLOWE RS FROM ALL OF US, THAT THE LEAST WE CAN DO. I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO REA LIZE THAT THIS TERRIBLE ACCIDENT HAS HAPPENED TO FLOYD-WITH ALL HIS FAU LTS HE WAS A FINE BROTHER , WE SHALL MISS HIM.
