    • Sisters Dorothea and Mary Ann Tunstead married 2nd cousins Edward and John William Burtchaell (who were great grandsons of Peter Burtchaell).

A family memoir of Samuel Waters Burtchaell records that John and Dorothea brought seven
of their children with them to California from Newark. The 1860 City Directory of Newark
lists John as a cabinetmaker living at #6 Milton Street; the 1870 edition lists him as a carpenter
at #16 Milton. Thus Dorcas and Bartholomew were born in California.

The memoir relates their journey: "The family took a steamer from New York to Panama, then
across the Isthmus by rail and then another steamer to San Francisco. Mr. Burtchaell often
told about their steamer stopping off by Acapulco, Mexico, to pick up survivors of a wreck
and of seeing the survivors lined up on the beach."

Albert Field Burtchaell, Sam's younger brother, wrote: John and Dorothea "moved west in
1872 and upon arrival at San Francisco, went to live at James Tunstead's ranch. This land is
now part of Hamilton Air Force Base, township of Novato, in Marin County, north of San
Francisco. Dorcas was born on the ranch'. Shortly afterward the family moved to San
Francisco where there were good work opportunities for father John who was an expert
cabinet maker and worked at decorating and fmishing the interiors of railway passenger cars.

"In 1878 the family moved back to Marin County and lived on their own farm where the town
of Larkspur now stands. Father John was getting into his age and the whole family liked the
pretty country and salubrious climate. Here they operated a dairy farm of about 40 cows and a
large pear orchard. They lived here until 1893 when mother Dora passed away, having been
preceded by father John by some years.

"The Burtchaell home, a rather imposing old place, is still standing [1971] on what is now the
main street of Larkspur and is now known as the Costello House. The Costello family has
      been there for several generations."

Al says Burtchaell Park in Larkspur is the site of the old Dolliver House; Tunstead Avenue, in
San Anselmo, honors James, who gave land for the city hall, fire house, etc.
Sam says his Father, Sam, was instrumental in having both parks dedicated, and that he visited
the original log cabin in Larkspur where the family used to summer.
      Larkspur Past and Present reports:

"#46 Patrick King House, 105 King Street. In 1869 Patrick King established cattle and dairy
operations at the comer of Magnolia and King Streets. King's farm was first listed on the tax
      rolls in 1878

"The original 1870s farm house visible in old photographs was moved closer to the comer
of Magnolia A venue and King Street when the bedroom portion of the old house was
incorporated with a new, two-story house. The Queen Anne style residence, built in the 1890s,
included a porch and tower. The exterior shiplap siding is decorated with shingle work,
      rinceau trim and bracketed cornices.

"When Charles W. Wright first bought the King ranch and subdivided it, this house was the
first sale Wright made. He sold it to John William Burtchaell who lived in it with his wife
Dorothy, a native of County Carlow, Ireland, with their nine children--five boys and four girls.
The Burtchaells continued to operate the property as a farm, selling milk, cream, butter, eggs
and fruit--especially pears--from their orchard to San Francisco markets. Later, son Peter
Burtchaell opened two grocery stores, one in Larkspur at 489 Magnolia A venue, and another
      in San Rafael."

The article notes that the property was later acquired by the Costello family [who still owned it
when I (JTB) visited in the 1970s].

James Tunstead Burtchaell III, C.S.C., Family Database of Burtchaell Family: The Genealogy of the Burtchaell Family, (Name: Self; Date: 2002, 153 pages + xvii;), 153 pages + xvii pages in the Preface. Descendants of Michael Burtchaell (1648–1732) of Burgage More, County Wicklow, Province of Leinster, Ireland are covered in the great majority of the book. This line of the Burtchaell family is called the "Leinster Burtchaells." Included in the Leinster line are the descendants of New Orleans immigrant Nicholas Burtchaell (1826–1890), who form the "New Orleans line" of Burtchaells, included on pages 24, 45–47, 69, 84–85, 97–103, 113–116. The index to the entire manuscript appears on pages 141–153. For those users who have full viewing rights to information and media for living individuals in the family tree, the entire Burtchaell family manuscript is available (click on the attached pdf file). However, the manuscript is not viewable on the regular public site since it contains information on some living individuals; instead, the preface can be viewed via the link below. Gerald Burtchaell of New Orleans (a great grandson of Nicholas Burtchae.
Nicholas Burtchaell (1826–1890) and his wife Annie Dinnin Burtchaell (1840–1917) "are the scions of the New Orleans Burtchaells" (page 46).
Regarding Nicholas Burtchaell, who immigrated to New Orleans in the mid-1850s:

Also from page 46: "His story was unknown to Dublin bachelor chronicler George Dames Burtchaell (1853–1921) who simply noted him as 'died unmarried.' Nicholas emigrated on the same ship as young Annie Dinnin; they met after disembarking in New Orleans and married soon afterward.

"The family retains the recollection that Nicholas fled Ireland. One story (Wyona Denstedt) is that he and a cousin were out riding and the cousin was killed. Nicholas, disguised as a negro, then emigrated. Another concurs in that Nicholas had to sneak out of Ireland. There is further belief that one not his brothers wished him to come up to Canada to take our his business.

"Unlike most other Burtchaell branches, the Louisiana Burtchaells have been Catholics. Their chronicler has been Gerald J. Burtchaell, who in 1971 studied the genealogy and occupations of the Louisiana Burtchaells."
