Notes:
Jean Ferran moved to New Orleans shortly after his mother Marthe (nêe Feugas dit Manescau) Ferran died in Uzan, and 12 years later he and Marie sold the house and four hectaires of Larneilh in Uzan, 64370 Arthez de Béarn to Pierre Marquehosse for 8290 francs on April 2, 1905. The total sale, including additional farm land, was for 22500 francs. Jean Ferran was represented at the sale by his father-in-law Jean Péré. Uzan is in the canton of Arzacy, department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, just northwest of Pau. Pau is the main city in the area and has an impressive chateau overlooking the majestic snow-capped Pyrénées. It is the birthplace of Henri IV.
Mimi (Audrey (née St. Raymond) Vitter), Père (A. L. Vitter Jr.), and Donna Vitter visited Larneilh on Tuesday, May 19, 1981 and met Amédée Marquehosse and his wife, who served them wine and cake and showed them the legal document for the sale of the farm to them by Jean Ferran. Amédée's father Pierre, who had bought the farm, had died. He had three sons--Christian (wife Maryse), Jacques, and Michel (wife Marie Paule) — and three daughters — Maïthée, ?, and Monique. Christian (current owner of the farm) and Maryse have two sons Eric and Franck and one daughter Christelle. Eric and his wife Véronique have a son Jean-Baptiste and a daughter Mathilde.
Donna, Jeff, Sharon (née Weaver), and Jillian Vitter visited the farm in late August 1986 en route to Spain while Jeff was on sabbatical in Paris. Amédée Marquehosse's wife had died recently. He showed them around the house and the little vineyard. We have a picture in the main house with Amédée Marquehosse and another with one-year-old Jillian seated on the hearth in front of the fireplace.
Jeff, Sharon, Jillian, Scott, and Audrey visited on December 24, 1998 and met Amédée's son Christian, the current owner. They had called Christian's home from Uzan after visiting the Ferran-St. Raymond-Cougot WWI monument in front of the town hall. Christian, who was retiring from Rhône-Poulenc, was starting a renovation of the main house into two apartments, one to serve as the residence of his son Franck, who was nearly finished college. He invited the Vitters to his house in the nearby town of Cescau, 64170 Artix, where they met his wife Maryse, a retired teacher in Pau. Either Christelle or Veronique holds her former teaching position. They were extremely nice, and it was a very pleasant visit. They served refreshments and told about their family. In January 2000 they sent Jeff and Sharon several family pictures taken at the July 31, 1999 wedding of Anne (oldest daughter of Michel) and Stéphane in Bordeaux and at the recent christening of son Eric and Véronique's son Jean-Baptiste.
Brown hair, brown eyes, dark complexion.

- Event: Between Jul and Sep 1934, France; Trip with Mimi (Léocadie Péré Ferran), Mémère (Marthe Ferran St. Raymond), Tawo (Rose Ferran), and Mémère\'s five children Audrey, Albert, Dede, Buddie, and Buster to France. They sailed from N.Y. on the ship Champlain (French Line) after spending a few days in New York City, where Uncle John Ferran showed them special sights (Broadway, Statue of Liberty, Fifth Avenue, Bronx Zoo, etc.). They landed in Le Havre and went to the southwest of France where Mimi\'s home had been. The trip was probably to settle financial and succession matters following the June 1933 death of Mimi\'s mother Rose Ricaud Péré. They also visite Lourdes and Paris. In Paris, one of the kids\' favorite spots was an eatery called Pam Pam that served American food such as hot dogs, hamburgers, etc. They returned on the ship Ile de France. (Note: Mimi here refers to Léocadie Péré Ferran; Audrey St. Raymond would marry A. L. Vitter Jr. and several decades later be known as Mimi to her grandchildren.)

Notes:
Mémère and Pépère would host Wednesday night dinner for the Vitter family, usually serving roast chicken. Mémère was a school teacher before she got married. In those days, you had to be single to be a teacher. Jeff remembers his first day at kindergarden at St. Mathias School in September 1960. Mémère accompanied him to school that morning. (Perhaps Mimi had morning sickness!). When they arrived, the teacher was not yet there, and instead there was general bedlam. The kids were laughing and running around the classroom. Mémère took one look and quickly put her foot down, and the entire class immediately fell into total silence. It was an impressive display of will.
The children of Mémère and Pépère would bring their children each Sunday morning to visit, and then go across the yard to the nextdoor home of Tawo and Uncle John Ferran. While the adults talked in the house, the grandchildren would often play hide and seek or football on the side lawn between the two houses. Dede and Mémère would take a group of grandchildren to lunch afterwards.
Mémère was always interested in her grandchildren. Jeff Vitter remembers walking to her house each Wednesday after St. Matthias School. Mémère would send him to the corner store for a quart of ice cream and a wooden top, and then would sit down with him as he ate the ice cream to find out how his day went. When Tootie was young, she was fond of going up to Mémère and saying, "I wish I had a quarter."

- Name: Uncle John
- Reference Number: 1348
- Military Service: Abt 1916; Translator in France, WWI
- Residence: Bef 1930, 930 N. Broad Street, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA
- Occupation: Between 1930 and 1960; Psychiatrist, state hospitals of New York
- Residence: Abt 1960, Manhattan, New York, New York, USA
- Residence: Between 1965 and 1991, 3515 Napoleon Avenue 70125, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Notes:
Uncle John skipped college and went directly into medical school at Tulane University (Jeff Vitter thinks). During WWI, he served in the U.S. Army as a doctor/medic and translator in France.. After the war concluded, he stayed behind in France for a year or so. His helmet was at his niece Audrey St. Raymond Vitter's house, Jeff remembers, up until Hurricane Katrina in 2005
Uncle John worked as a psychiatrist in upstate New York in the state hospitals, and he kept an apartment in Manhattan, where he lived until he retired and moved in with his maiden sister Rose (Tawo). Uncle John went directly to Medical School at Tulane without first going to college, and he served in the army as a translator, since he spoke fluent French. After the war, he remained in France for a couple of years before returning to the US. Uncle John was a very private individual and never got married. He was also very shy, often not facing the camera in family pictures. He was very generous and kept up with his many great nephews. He died after several years of being bedridden. After Tawo died, he was not really conscious that she was gone.
Uncle John met the Vitters and showed them around New York City when the group went to the New York World's Fair in 1964. When the group went to see the new musical "Funny Girl", starring Barbara Streisand, Jeff was judged too young, and instead Uncle John took him to go see the new Beatles movie "It's a Hard Day's Night." Al Vitter would occasionally stay at Uncle John's apartment in the late 1960s during graduate school, since Uncle John had moved back to New Orleans semi-permanently by then. It was thought that he had given up his apartment around 1970, but it turns out that he still had it in the mid-1980s. The discovery was made when the man that Uncle John hired to pick up his mail each week in a NYC post office box called Dede in New Orleans and explained that he was no longer going to be able to continue the weekly job, since he was in his 80s and it was getting hard for him to do it. Uncle John never disposed of things. When he received a birthday or Christmas present, he would neatly label and catalog it, and then store it away in his closet.109. Augustine Marie Rose Ferran

- Retired: 21 May 1963, Roosevelt Hotel, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA; Tawo retired as Director of Kindergarten-Primary Education for the Orleans Parish School Board after 47 years of teaching and administration. A large retirement dinner was held in her honor in May 1963.
Notes:
Tawo (short for Tante Rose) was a favorite great aunt for the grandchildren of her sister Martha (Mémère). She never got married. In those days, only single women were allowed to work as teachers. Tawo became Assistant Superintendent of the New Orleans Public School System. Audrey (Mimi) Vitter has newspaper clippings of her testiminial retirement dinner in the early 1960s. There is a picture of Tawo with local officials, including Councilman Joseph Giarrusso. She knew many former teachers and was held in deep respect by those she worked with.
Mémère's grandchildren would visit Mémère at 3539 Napoleon and then walk across the yard to visit Tawo and Uncle John at 3515 Napoleon. Tawo moved there with her mother Marie Léocadie Péré at the same time as Mémère. Dede (Marie Ferran Zimmermann) and Tawo often took the kids to lunch afterwards. See the entries for Dede and Karl Zimmermann for more details. Tawo's basement was a massive collection of old schoolbooks and other teaching materials that she collected through the decades. She drove Buicks in the 1960s and 1970s until the family convinced her that she should let others drive. Jeff Vitter remembers Tawo "hiring" him to repaint her cement ducks. Jeff, always trying to "make it even", kept getting too much green paint first on one side, then the other. At the end the ducks were almost all green with very little white.
She had a great long-term memory, although when older her short-term memory was poor. She would recall the car she used to drive to college and her first teaching job at Crossman School (next to Jesuit) on Carrollton Ave. She even remembered the name of one of her pupils in her first class, whom she said had a crush on her.
Tawo was known for her eccentricities, but at the bottom of it all was a very good heart and sense of humor. Some of her memorable expressions:
• "Now YOU know!" This expression is said with an emphasis never heard elsewhere. It is roughly the equivalent of "Now what do you know?" or "I'll be!".
• "Keep your trash!" This expression was first uttered by Tawo at Maison Blanche or D. H. Holmes in the late 1970s. She was trying to pay for her merchandise with a New Orleans Shopper's Credit Card, the little orange credit card once used by various local stores like Maison Blanche, Holmes, Krauss, etc. that had recently met its demise, falling victim to the more popular national credit cards like BankAmericard/Visa and Master Card. The salesclerk explained to Tawo that the store no longer accepted that credit card, to which Tawo calmly pushed the merchandise toward the salesclerk, did her signature outward flip of her fingers, and said with a flourish, "Keep your trash!". She then walked away, leaving behind a dazed salesclerk. That expression later become a favorite way for family members who were treating for a meal or movie to turn down payments from others.
• "Hubba bubba bubba" (said as fast as possible). Similar to above.
• "1, 2, 3." A way of saying, "Now let's get going" or "Hurry up."
• Purse story.
• "Foggy." Tawo's description of the weather on any day of the week, including bright sunny days. Tawo's eyes gradually worsened in her old age, and she always remarked about how dark and foggy things were.
• "Fo-teen". Immediately following thirteen. The cousins would often ask Tawo questions with that answer, so that they could hear her say it. Similar in effect to Audrey's French-like pronunciation of Minnesota.
• "All it needs is a little exterior paint." This was Tawo's fix for most of the Ferran Estate rental property woes. Uncle John Ferran had a similar approach, but his expression was "65, 65, 65, ..." which he interspersed with Tawo's statements. (He meant that the rent should be set to $65 per month.)
• "Whatcha know good?" Tawo was always interested in people and asked this question (often several times, at five minute intervals) as a way of finding out how things were going.
• "Vegetables" with clear enunciation of all four syllables.

Notes:
There is a history of A.L. and Audrey Vitter on the Relativity Research page https://vitter.org/familytree/histories/ALandAudreyVitter.php
Audrey (pronounced Oh-DRAY in the French manner, also known to her grandchildren as Mimi) was recognized by all she comes in contact with for her good heart and kindness. She received several awards for her volunteer work, including the Order of St. Louis Medallion, the highest award conferred by the Archdiocese of New Orleans on lay people. Audrey was always full of expression when speaking or reading. When learning something new, she would gleefully exclaim, "Now YOU know!”, a saying she got from her maternal aunt Rose (a.k.a. Tawo) that became a family favorite. Audrey’s recreations of conversations are treasures, especially with her colorful voice impersonations, even if they all tended to sound alike. Her Thursday night family dinners are legendary and have inspired the wonderful cookbook put together by Wendy Baldwin Vitter for Audrey's 78th birthday in 1998.
Audrey grew up with her family in New Orleans on Broad Street speaking French. In fact, she couldn't speak English when she started kindergarten, but quickly learned. (Even four and a half decades later, when visiting Donna in France, she could still understand French when spoken.) They lived next to her grandparents on N. Broad Street in a house her grandfather built. Mimi can remember her great grandmother Rose Ricaud Péré (who was getting a little senile in her old age) sometimes chasing the kids around with a broom. In 1938 the family moved to 3539 Napoleon Avenue, cattycorner to her future husband A.L. Vitter Jr.
She was valedictorian of her class at Ursuline College. Audrey was well-traveled while growing up, traveling to France, New York, and the Western U.S. with her mother and siblings. There are several pictures in the albums. Her oldest son Al III, a diehard New York Yankee baseball fan, would always kid her that she never took him to go see a Yankees game as promised. But the family did travel a lot, including the New York Worlds Fair in 1964. (I guess the Yankees were out of town that week.)
Audrey and her husband A. L. Vitter, Jr. (Père) lived in Cambridge during WWII while A. L. worked at the MIT Radiation Lab. In fact, Al III was born at Boston General Hospital. Audrey was not fond of cold weather, often wearing an overcoat at the hint of a cold front. How she walked across the Charles River bridge each day from Cambridge to Boston is something no one could ever understand. We have a neat picture online of Mimi and Père holding infant Al III while sitting on the steps of Bexley Hall on Mass Ave. at MIT in Cambridge, MA. The same pose was recreated 19 years later when Al III was in college at Notre Dame.
Audrey learned to cook (and extremely well at that) from the family maid Rachel. Rachel later came to work for Audrey and A.L., mainly on Saturdays in the 1950s and 1960s. Marie Richard also worked steadily as maid for Audrey in the 1960s; her husband was a cook at Commander's Palace and was fatally shot one day while outside.
Audrey was known for having "the girls" over for teas and meetings for their various volunteer activities. Friends included George and Honey Lacour, Angela Kelly (mother of David's friend Claude), her sister Dede, Betty Gettlefinger, and Mary Frances Krone. Honey was well-known for her exagerated facial expressions during stories, which were a perfect complement to Audrey's impersonations.
Audrey lived independently by herself after A.L.'s death. She was evacuated to Atlanta as a result of Hurricane Katrina on August 28, 2005. Her 4100 Vincennes Place home in New Orleans sustained four feet of flood water as a result of the levee breaks. Her health went downhill while in Atlanta, and she died of congestive heart failure six weeks later.

Notes:
Dede performed as entertainer Lola Bright during halftime of one of the Super Bowl games in the early 70s. We were at her house on Sardonyx watching the game on TV. By popular request, Lola made other appearances from time to time.
Dede had a going-away party for Al & Alison in December 1980 before they left for sabbatical in Oxford, England. The big attraction of the night was the appearance of a local belly dancer.
Dede and Tawo would take the kids out to lunch each Sunday, often at old favorites like The Beacon at the corner of Napoleon and Claiborne (now a gas station), La Cuisine ("The Cuisine"), and Maple Hill on Maple Street. Karl would usually order to main courses and give one to Jeff, usually turkey poulette.Marie married Kent Joseph Zimmermann on 11 May 1957 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Email to Jeff Vitter on 6/24/2005:
Hi,
My name is Marlene Seneca Pohl and I live in Kokomo!
Our common relation is Perry St. Raymond. Perry is/was my first cousin...his mother (Jeanne Orillion) was my maternal aunt...and godmother.
As I am sure you have heard, Perry died suddenly last week Tuesday. It happend the day before my daughter and I were to arrive in NO to meet him and my mother, his Aunt Yvonne. My daughter cancelled her trip and I went alone...my mother lost her husband about 6 weeks ago.
He had a big funeral, lots and lots of flowers, many people. He was just the nicest, sweetest, smartest, most graceful fellow. When the hurricane, was it Lillie?, was bearing down on Crowley, LA a couple of years ago he drive to Crowley to stay with my mother and her invalid husband. He spent the last several weeks helping my mother figure out the logistics of a sea burial for her husband. She called him the son-she-never-had. He is sorely missed. Unforgetable.
Today I was thinking of Perry so I typed his name into google. There I saw your geneology website (Perry is pictured in his King Tucks togs.). What a surprise when I got to the bottom of the page and saw that you are here in Indiana.
