    Notes 
    • DNA evidence has shown that Jacob Kauffman (1737–1818) is not related to Taufer Isaac Kauffman or his son the 1737 emigrant Isaac Kauffman (Sharon Vitter's 6th great grandfather), at least not through male-male links. Nor is Jacob related to the 1717 emigrant brothers Andreas and Isaac Kauffman. However, he is a close relative to Michael Kauffman (1675–1718). In this tree, he is hypothesized to be Michael's grandson and the son of Michael's son John.

      There is an alternative scenario: It is possible that Jacob was not a descendant of Michael, but rather that Jacob and Michael had a common ancestor in Europe. It is possible that Jacob himself was an emigrant and that his parents remained in Europe.

      Y-DNA analysis provides highly accurate information about paternal ancestry — that is, about people who are related through male-male links. Typically such people would all have the same last name, since any two such people would have a common male ancestor reachable using only father-son links. It's possible that Sharon's line of the Kauffman family (e.g., including Isaac Kauffman mentioned above) could be related to Michael Kauffman's line if there were an intermarriage during earlier generations in Switzerland or the Rhineland-Palatinate in Europe, as such a connection would not be picked up via Y-DNA analysis.
